Timber Protection
Timber construction made fire safe
Timber is returning to construction because it stores carbon and makes warm architecture. It is, however, a combustible material, and most regulations were not written for loadbearing elements that burn. With the right passive fire protection, a timber building becomes as safe as a conventional one.

Systems and images: PROMAT.
Preventing ignition
PROMADUR® transparent intumescent coating that leaves the wood visible.
Protecting loadbearing elements
Cladding of beams, columns and CLT panels with PROMATECT® boards.
Floors and compartments
Fire-rated timber floors and walls, with all penetrations sealed.
What changes when the building is timber
Exposed timber adds fuel load to the space and affects how the fire develops. The design has to answer three questions: how ignition is prevented, how the loadbearing structure is protected and how the fire compartments are kept intact.
Prefabrication and renovation
In prefabricated timber construction the boards are cut to size and integrated in the factory together with the fire stops. On existing timber roofs and floors, the protection is added from the underside without dismantling.
